    hi all.
I've got a carpenter building me a rocket rack. I was just wondering if the tube are a certain type or if pvc tubes will be fine.
    Thanks all :)

Any pvc tubing is fine, want to be at least 1" diameter tho to cater for big rockets with 1/2" sticks.

I have four of the racks Nigel has for sale. They are excellent and I am flummoxed as to why they are not a top seller. I cannot advocate them high enough and am certain if you offered a sensible price they might let you have a few or wait until Sale day and hope for a bargain.

    That's brilliant thank you
I'm no good with building anything so getting a friend to do it I'm kinda cheating haha. :)

You can even use industrial 40mm square box section if you wanted, but then you would need to buy a fork lift or some other heavy lifting equipment to move it around the garden ;)

That is impressive, with the plastic pipe u can line the top few inches with tin foil to improve its longevity

I would say ideally aluminium tubing would be the best material to make the tubing and the entire rack, light and last years but the expense would be too much for most people.

That looks evil in a good way haha
I've already agreed to getting one built otherwise I would probably buy some off Nigel.
Using foil is a good idea thanks or maybe even a little metal sleeve over the top off them.

Plastic drainpipe's good if you're going for the over-the-shoulder RPG/Panzerschreck look.

Seriously though, plumbing pipe or electrical conduit are usually easy enough to find cheap.

    That foil tape works well.

Yeah I've been looking online at screwfix ect pretty cheap for the amount I need.

+1 for hoping they are a Sale Day Special, can't see S letting me have one otherwise.

Can someone Team Galactic stick a yellow 'REDUCED' sticker on one please? S does love a yellow sticker! lol

Last year I bought a load of piping from Screwfix or toolstation, can't remember which but it came in 3 metre lengths and was cheap as chips I just sawed them up into sizeable pieces.
Turd to fit in the car though :D

Also if you buy enough rockets you get them free.

Lol yea I have too many at the moment

They sell saws too, (and tape measures!) so you can chop it up in the car park.
    Or they deliver.
    Just sayin. :p

I do remember last year on some off the auction they were selling tubes and I thought what would anyone ever want loads off them for haha
  18. Krony

Krony Galactic Firework Addict Competition Meet 2018 Champion

Yea just chop it in half lol.

I'm sure Nigel ran out the other year when big rockets got good again.
They don't expect everyone to light dozens at a time lol, so you only get a few per case.

Buy more cases, you can never have too many rockets :)

Just in case any new people are reading this, or old members want yet another opportunity to laugh at my stupidity:

Don't get 20mm Ducting, it's not big enough for the Supernovas.
I thought I was being clever, getting slightly smaller diameter just to save me cutting a longer length in the carpark, but its just too tight. Annoyingly tight.

Serves me right for laughing up there ^ I suppose.

Turn it into a hawk rack then and make a second :)

A nice little thing for us this year is last year we split the 4-king marvelous which only came with 1 tube whereas this year the supernovas come with 4 tubes per pack so that's really handy :)

That is nice as i get more cash back from selling the tubes ;)

I am modifying my rocket rack to use copper piping this year, nearly had a nasty one last year where one of the plastic tubes had melted enough just to catch the stick and prevent launching and I got rocket shrapnel in the side of my head!

fortunately I was far enough away by that point for it just to be irritating rather than serious injury or worse.

I had launched a lot of rockets through the tube though so my own stupid fault.

If you can afford copper you can afford PPE! lol

Ideally you want safety glasses and a visored helmet, built in ear defenders are nice but if you are firing with someone else you want to be able to hear them.

I had a big thick coat on and my safety woolen hat(!) and eye pro.

copper pipe isn't that expensive in 3m lengths and I only run 5 tubes so it isn't a big rack or expense to do. It is also a tall rack with the idea being that if stuff does go wrong it is already above head height when it does.

Copper is great for rocket tubes, light, reasonably inexpensive and alot harder wearing than plastic, as Sir Jinn :sparkler: (jinny) mentioned above, safety glasses are minimum for firing really.

Being disabled and slow and unsteady moving I have got into the practise of adding slow visco fuse extensions on everything other than class 1 stuff to give extra time to get to safety and better viewing distance. This even applies when my helpers on are on scene doing the firing for me as it offers them greater safety and means they don't have to rush back in the dark and risk slipping and falling etc.
It is my view and experience that far more people have accidents and injuries on bonfire night each year from moving about too fast in the dark, often damp conditions and slipping, falling, colliding and tripping etc than are injured by fireworks and sparklers.
Whatever type of tube people use a rocket can potentially burst in the tube such as from having a faulty underpowered motor or from flashing through. I have so far only experienced these faults with cat 2 rockets but all rockets need to be treated with respect and my safety distances used increase to cater for the larger bursts that can be delivered by larger rockets.
All the slow visco used adds to costs but in my view it is money very well spent.

Had a few medium to large rockets burst at ground level or close to it, it certainly wakes you up! and reminds you about the use of proper PPE.
Had the same with big cakes also with tubes blowing at ground level and setting other fireworks off, you only get 1 pair of eyes!
